The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently placed Topamax in Pregnancy Category D.  This means there is a risk of birth defects based on human data.  Studies have shown that children born to mothers taking Topamax (and its generic form, topiramate) were at an increased risk of birth defects as a result of Topamax. Topamax birth defects often include cleft-lip and cleft-palate.

Topamax side effects, including birth defects, are often what generate Topamax lawsuits. However, there are also known side effects for the person taking Topamax, or topiramate.

Other Topamax side effects

  • Chest pain
  • Decreased sweating
  • Kidney stones
  • Dizziness
  • Leg pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Mood problems
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Bronchitis
  • Acne
  • Insomnia
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Decrease in vision (acute myopia)
  • Metabolic acidosis (which causes tiredness, loss of appetite, and impaired consciousness)
